ROLES

Jon works extensively in musical theatre, in roles ranging from musical supervisor or musical director, to arranger, programmer, and keyboard player.

He has covered many styles and genres from Rodgers & Hammerstein to Sondheim, from Frank Loesser to Lloyd Webber, from The Beggar's Opera to the songs of The Proclaimers, from American classics to new commissions such as the Kielty brothers' Sundowe which won Cameron Mackintosh's Highland Quest for a new musical in 2007.

For a decade, Jon supervised and/or arranged the musicals in Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s repertory seasons, working with both actor-musicians and dedicated bands. In 2018, Chicago overtook My Fair Lady to become the theatre’s best-selling show ever.

PLAYS WITH SONGS

He has also worked on many plays with songs, most recently on Piaf at Bristol Old Vic for Bristol School of Acting, with director Stuart Wood, starring Maya Pope.

Others range from Mother Courage with Maggie Steed at the Royal Lyceum Edinburgh with a score by Jonathan Dove, to David Greig & Gordon McIntyre's Midsummer; from Privates on Parade with music by Denis King, to compilations such as Oh What A Lovely War!; from the Edwardian songs of Para Handy to the travellers’ folk songs of The Yellow on the Broom; from the 1930s music of They Shoot Horses, Don't They? to two productions of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice featuring iconic singers of the 1960s and 70s.

Jon has also performed and written music for over 20 Christmas shows, 12 of these by author Stuart Paterson, and, more recently, with children's author Vivien French as lyricist for two Roald Dahl shows at Dundee Rep.

His most recent Christmas commission was for Cinderella in 2025 at Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum Theatre, with director Jemima Levick.
